3 Things to Do Before Boarding Your Dog

June 22, 2016 by pjackiewicz Leave a Comment

Whether it is because you are going on a trip or have a guest who is allergic to dogs, you need to do your part so your dog remains happy while at a boarding kennel. Dog boarding can be a very fun experience for you and your pet. Here is a look at the things you need to do before you board your dog.

Choose the best dog boarding facility

Talk to friends and family members who have boarded their dogs before and find out what their experience was like. If you get any negative feedback high chances are that you will experience the same. Before making the final decision, visit the kennels to see what facilities they offer. Choose one that will suit your dog. Remember that, just like people, each dog has its unique needs. Only if these needs are met at the boarding facility will the dog be comfortable to stay there. The most important qualities that you need to consider are cleanliness, the location and the outdoor play area.

Prepare requirements set by the kennel

Different kennels will have different requirements. Mostly, you will be required to provide your dog’s vaccination records. They need to be sure that the dogs are safe from diseases like rabies and other vaccines which will be specified and communicated on inquiry. Some kennels require tests to be carried out before the dog can be admitted into the boarding house. Talk to your vet who will help you with this and all the necessary paperwork. Foods and treats may or may not be provided at the kennel. Find this out and if not provide more than enough for the time you intend to leave your pet there. If your dog is on any medication be sure to pack it as well.

Communication details

You will surely miss your dog and will want to know how it is fairing at the kennel. So be sure to get the contact details of the facility and leave your number so they can communicate in case of an emergency. If your dog has a specific vet, then leave his/her communication details so emergencies can be attended to as fast as possible.
